Attend and participate in our environmental educational and study programs in Cuba. Exploring the endless diversity of flora and fauna just outside the mysterious excitement of historic Old Havana, this program is a People to People environmental tour of some of the most dynamic habitats and environmentally important areas of the western hemisphere
This tour includes the opportunity to visit and learn about the coral reefs of Cuba and identify corals that are almost extinct in the waters off Florida. Coral reefs are one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth, rivaled only by tropical rain forests. They are made up not only of hard and soft corals, but also sponges, crustaceans, mollusks, fish, sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and much more. The lack of understanding and appreciation for this fragile ecosystem has resulted in the degradation of the coral reefs of the United States. Experiencing the healthy coral reefs within the waters of Cuba and discussing the protections enforced by and with the Cuban people will enhance the knowledge and appreciation for those who take advantage of the People to People opportunity. In time this understanding will promote citizen support for coral reef protection initiatives at home.
We will provide a full-time schedule of activities intended to enhance contact with the Cuban people, support civil society in Cuba, and enhanced the understanding of our shared environment. You will be accompanied by one of our experts in the environmental disciplines you experience.
We also provide hiking to the Biosphere and learning about the indigenous birds of Cuba, including the Bee Hummingbird as well as the habits and habitats of migratory birds that make Cuba an important stop on their way to their breeding grounds in the United States. Learning about the habitat management for these important species directly from the ornithological experts of Cuba will elucidate the importance of habitat management at home.
Our program for three nights and four days costs $3,600. This includes airfare from Miami to Havana, hotel accommodations at the Melia Havana (or equivalent), including breakfast and transportation to the environmental education sites. It also includes local environmental specialists who will provide direct access to and discussions about the environmental attributes of the island of Cuba.
